Sudeley Castle Weddings: A Photographer’s Guide to Getting Married at Sudeley Castle

There are wedding venues that need dressing.

And then there is Sudeley Castle.

Sitting just outside Winchcombe in the Cotswolds, Sudeley has that slightly ridiculous advantage of already looking like somebody has spent a small fortune designing a wedding venue — except most of it has been there for hundreds of years.

Ancient stone, formal gardens, ruined walls covered in flowers, long lawns, a proper castle and enough little corners to disappear into without feeling as though you’ve left your own wedding.

For a photographer, it’s quite difficult not to get excited about.

And for couples looking for a Sudeley Castle wedding photographer, particularly if you want photographs that feel relaxed and natural rather than spending two hours being marched around every photogenic part of the estate, it is exactly the sort of venue that suits the way I work.

I’m Keith from Wychwood Weddings, an Oxfordshire-based wedding photographer covering weddings throughout the Cotswolds. My approach is mostly documentary: real moments, good light, people being themselves and a little editorial direction when it is actually useful.

Sudeley gives you an awful lot to work with without needing to manufacture very much at all.

Getting married at Sudeley Castle

Sudeley Castle sits within around 1,200 acres of Cotswolds countryside and offers several different spaces across the estate for a wedding day. The castle deliberately hosts a limited number of weddings each year, with both standard wedding options and exclusive-hire celebrations available.

That exclusivity is part of what makes it particularly interesting.

Despite the scale of the place, a Sudeley wedding doesn’t have to feel enormous.

You can move from stone and dark interiors to open gardens, ruins, lawns and countryside over the course of the day, and each part has a completely different atmosphere.

Photographically, that’s gold.

More importantly, you don’t need to turn your wedding into a photoshoot to make the most of it.

St Mary’s Chapel

At the heart of the gardens is St Mary’s Chapel, one of the most extraordinary places for a wedding ceremony at Sudeley.

The chapel can accommodate up to 130 guests and can be used for wedding blessings.

It also comes with rather more history than your average Cotswolds ceremony room.

Sudeley is the only private castle in England with a queen buried within its grounds. Katherine Parr — Henry VIII’s sixth and surviving wife — lived at Sudeley and was buried in St Mary’s after her death in 1548.

Which means when I say the place has atmosphere, I’m not talking about some strategically positioned fairy lights.

The chapel is intimate, textured and full of character. From a documentary photography point of view, it is exactly the sort of setting where the architecture can frame what is happening without overwhelming it.

And then you step outside into the gardens.

That’s quite an exit.

Outdoor ceremonies at Sudeley Castle

If you’re picturing an outdoor Cotswolds wedding, this is where Sudeley becomes particularly special.

Ceremonies and blessings can take place amongst several of the gardens and historic ruins, including the Ha-Ha and the Tithe Barn, with the castle, rose gardens and surrounding countryside becoming part of the backdrop.

This is the part I particularly like.

You don’t have one designated “photo spot”.

You have people moving through gardens, children running across lawns, drinks outside the castle, conversations happening against old stone walls and guests wandering between spaces.

Those in-between moments are often where the photographs come from.

Not:

“Could everybody please stand exactly here and pretend to talk to one another?”

Actual life.

Preferably with a glass of champagne involved.

The Orangery at Sudeley Castle

For the wedding breakfast, The Orangery is probably one of Sudeley’s most recognisable wedding spaces.

It’s a light-filled glass structure overlooking the Cotswolds and can seat up to 150 guests.

And the light matters.

Large, bright spaces are wonderful for wedding photography because they allow me to photograph what is happening rather than constantly fighting the room.

Speeches, reactions across tables, somebody crying three seats away, someone’s dad suddenly deciding his speech needs to be 27 minutes long — all the important things.

The Orangery also works nicely as a contrast to the heavier stone and historic architecture elsewhere on the estate.

Your gallery doesn’t end up looking like every photograph was taken in the same room.

The gardens might be the best bit

It would be very easy to spend an hour photographing a couple around Sudeley.

I wouldn’t.

You have a wedding to attend.

My preference would be to steal you for perhaps ten or fifteen minutes at the right point in the day, have a walk, make a handful of portraits and then get you back to your guests.

The gardens make that particularly easy.

There is the Rose Garden, the Secret Garden, old ruins, fountains, hedges, open lawns and views towards the Cotswold hills. The ruins of the old Banqueting Hall are deliberately planted with a slightly wild, overgrown quality rather than being manicured into submission.

That’s much more interesting to me than a pristine backdrop.

Good wedding portraits shouldn’t necessarily look like wedding portraits.

A bit of movement. A hand. A dress caught by the wind. One frame where you’re both looking spectacular and another where one of you is laughing because I’ve asked you to do something mildly ridiculous.

That’s generally enough.

Golden hour at Sudeley

If the weather plays nicely, I’d always leave a little room in the timeline for another five or ten minutes outside later in the evening.

Not a second enormous portrait session.

Just a wander.

The castle itself specifically highlights the Rose Garden and grounds around sunset, when the late light reaches across the estate.

This is usually when things become more interesting photographically.

Jackets have disappeared. Veils have come off. Everybody is more relaxed. Dinner and speeches are done.

You look like yourselves again.

That’s generally when I want to take photographs.

And then everyone goes dancing

The evening celebrations can move into the Castle Coach House, which adjoins the Orangery and has its own bar.

And this is where my photography tends to change slightly.

During the day I’m generally quiet and observational.

Once the dance floor gets going, I’m considerably closer.

Flash. Movement. People half disappearing from the frame. Slightly wonky compositions. Expensive clothes behaving badly.

Exactly as nature intended.

I want the last part of a wedding gallery to feel different from the first.

A Sudeley Castle wedding can begin amongst gardens and centuries-old architecture and finish with somebody’s aunt dancing with her shoes in her hand.

Both deserve photographing properly.

Sudeley Castle weddings on film

I photograph weddings using a mixture of digital photography and 35mm film.

And Sudeley is made for film.

Cotswold stone, deep greens, flowers, slightly imperfect old walls and soft evening light all translate beautifully onto Kodak film stocks.

But I’m not interested in using film purely because it looks fashionable.

What I like about it is the difference in pace.

There is an imperfection to analogue photographs that works particularly well alongside documentary photography. Grain, colour, movement and the occasional frame that isn’t clinically perfect but somehow feels more like a memory.

My full-day Documentary Collection therefore combines digital photography with a curated selection of 35mm film throughout the wedding.

Not a separate “film photoshoot”.

Just film woven naturally through the day.

A documentary approach to Sudeley Castle wedding photography

One of the dangers of getting married somewhere spectacular is feeling obliged to spend your entire wedding day proving that you got married somewhere spectacular.

You don’t have to.

I don’t need to photograph you in front of every turret.

Your photographs should primarily be about you and the people you’ve brought together.

Sudeley becomes the setting.

So while I’ll absolutely use the castle, gardens, light and architecture, I’m equally interested in what is happening away from all that.

Your mum’s face during the ceremony.

Your friends trying not to cry.

Someone having a quiet five minutes outside.

Children doing things they have specifically been told not to do.

The table erupting during a speech.

The person throwing themselves into the dance floor approximately three songs earlier than socially acceptable.

That’s the stuff that eventually becomes important.

The beautiful venue simply gives it somewhere wonderful to happen.

Planning your wedding photography at Sudeley Castle

If I were building a photography timeline for a Sudeley wedding, I’d keep it relatively simple.

I would allow plenty of breathing room after the ceremony rather than immediately disappearing for photographs. Let everyone hug you. Have a drink. Actually experience it.

We can fit family groups into a fairly tight window.

Then I’d take you away briefly for portraits during the drinks reception, ideally using whichever part of the estate has the best light rather than following a predetermined list of “must have” locations.

And, if the evening light is doing something lovely, we’ll sneak outside again for ten minutes before returning to the party.

You shouldn’t look back at your wedding and remember spending it with your photographer.

I’d much rather you barely noticed me.

Staying at Sudeley Castle

For couples turning the wedding into a full Cotswolds weekend, accommodation is available across the Sudeley estate, including the Castle Gatehouse, cottages and converted historic buildings. The venue currently lists 19 holiday cottages alongside larger properties across the estate.

That also makes the morning particularly useful photographically.

Getting ready on-site tends to mean less travelling, fewer logistical headaches and much more opportunity for the early part of the day to unfold naturally.

And nobody has to spend forty minutes of their wedding morning sitting on the A40 wondering why they didn’t leave earlier.

Always a bonus.

Is Sudeley Castle right for your wedding?

If you’re looking for a traditional blank-canvas barn, probably not.

Sudeley has a personality.

That’s its strength.

I’d put it particularly high on the list for couples who want somewhere quintessentially English without it feeling twee; something luxurious without feeling like a hotel; and a venue that can carry a fairly sophisticated wedding while still allowing the day itself to feel relaxed.

There is grandeur when you want it.

But there are also ruins, gardens and slightly wild corners that stop everything becoming too polished.

That’s the balance I like.

And it works beautifully with documentary wedding photography.

I’m Keith, the photographer behind Wychwood Weddings.

I photograph weddings across Oxfordshire and the Cotswolds with a mixture of documentary photography, subtle editorial portraiture and 35mm film.

No endless posing. No turning your wedding into a twelve-hour content shoot. And no disappearing for an hour just as the champagne starts.

The aim is simple:

Photographs that look beautiful, but still feel like what actually happened.

If you’re planning a wedding at Sudeley Castle and that sounds like what you’re looking for, I’d love to hear what you’ve got planned.
