Wedding ideas for 2026 and 2027 (and why you should probably ignore half of them)

We are nearing the middle of 2026, which means the wedding industry is already working very hard to tell you what 2027 should look like.

You will likely see lists of predicted colour palettes, tablescape concepts, and suggestions about how to fold a napkin so it looks intentionally careless. The industry loves a trend. It gives everyone something to write about.

In reality, most weddings I photograph end up looking like whatever happens when you put a hundred people in a room with a free bar and let the British weather do what it wants.

If you are planning a wedding for the next year or two, here is what I am actually seeing on the ground. Not the mood board version, but the reality of how people are choosing to get married right now.

The return of the messy table

For a while, dining tables at weddings looked like museum exhibits. You were almost afraid to put a glass down in case you ruined the symmetry.

Now, I am seeing a lot more long, continuous tables covered in sharing plates. It looks less like a catalogue and more like a very good pub lock-in. You see olive oil spills, half-empty wine bottles, torn sourdough, and candles that have melted entirely over the candlesticks by eight o’clock.

People are passing plates and talking across each other instead of staring nervously at a floral arrangement. The tables look genuinely used, which makes for far more interesting photographs than pristine, untouched cutlery.

Aggressive film nostalgia

Couples are putting disposable cameras on every table again. The guests take this very seriously for about twenty minutes, before abandoning them next to a basket of bread.

I shoot 35mm alongside digital because I like the texture and the honest way it renders light. But there is a quiet comedy in watching a room full of people holding cheap plastic cameras up to their eyes, entirely forgetting that the flash will not reach past the end of their own noses.

The resulting photos will be mostly dark shapes and the occasional thumb, but the intention is lovely. People want things to feel a bit scruffy and physical again, rather than endlessly polished.

The disappearing timeline

Weddings used to run like military exercises. There was a spreadsheet, and if the speeches ran five minutes over, you could see the caterers panicking by the door.

Lately, the timeline feels more like a polite suggestion. Couples are leaving two hours for drinks instead of one. They are not scheduling fourteen different locations for portraits. They are just existing in the space they paid for.

If we need to take a few photos, we wander off for fifteen minutes when the light is doing something lovely against a wall. Then they go back to their friends. Nobody wants to spend their own party being directed by a person with three cameras swinging from a harness.

Accepting that it might rain

The weather has never read a wedding brief. There used to be a lot of stress about this, with people staring at their phones at ten in the morning, willing a small grey cloud icon to vanish.

Recently, people seem to have stopped caring quite so much. If it rains, the umbrellas come out. Dresses get muddy hems. Everyone huddles under the marquee entrance pretending it was a stylistic choice, or someone’s dad decides to stand outside anyway because he is wearing a sensible coat.

It usually makes for better photographs. People are far more human when they are slightly damp and compensating with gin.

A quiet word on trends

If you are looking at lists of ideas for 2027 and feeling tired, you have my full permission to close the tab.

Build a day that makes sense for the two of you. If that involves a highly specific napkin fold, brilliant. If it is just making sure the band is loud, the room is warm, and the drinks do not run out, that is equally brilliant.

Trends will change again by 2028. But a photograph of your nan having the time of her life in the corner of a slightly messy room is probably going to hold up just fine.
