Caitlin & Joe’s Oxford Town Hall Wedding and Meadley Walled Garden Reception

As an Oxford Town Hall wedding photographer, I loved documenting Caitlin and Joe’s day: a civil ceremony in the city centre followed by a relaxed reception in the walled garden at Meadley. It is a brilliant pairing for couples who want grand Victorian architecture for their vows and something greener and more informal for the party afterwards.

An Oxford Town Hall Wedding: Grand Victorian Ceremony in the Heart of the City

Oxford Town Hall is one of the finest civil ceremony settings in the city. Behind its imposing Victorian facade sit a series of grand, high-ceilinged rooms with ornate plasterwork, tall windows and a real sense of occasion, so your vows feel every bit as significant as the moment deserves. For couples who want architecture with genuine gravitas but without the formality of a church or college chapel, it is hard to beat. The central location also means everything sits within a short walk of Oxford’s spires, cobbled lanes and honey-coloured stone, which opens up a lot for photography.

The light inside is soft and directional through those big windows, which suits calm, unhurried coverage of the ceremony itself. Just outside, the building’s steps and stonework make a natural backdrop for confetti and the first few minutes as a married couple, while the surrounding streets give you a genuine sense of place. When Caitlin and Joe married here, the room’s scale gave their ceremony a quiet grandeur, but the same setting works just as beautifully for an intimate guest list as it does for a larger celebration.

Meadley Walled Garden: A Relaxed, Green Reception Just Outside the City

Pairing a city-centre ceremony with a reception at Meadley’s walled garden gives a wedding day two very different moods, and that contrast is part of the magic. After the grandeur of the Town Hall, the walled garden feels like stepping into somewhere private and green: sheltered brickwork, planting, and space to breathe. It suits couples who want their party to feel informal and personal rather than staged, with room for drinks on the lawn, garden games and long summer evenings that drift comfortably into the night.

A walled garden is a gift for photographers, too. The brick walls hold warmth and colour, the planting softens every frame, and the enclosed feel means guests relax quickly. As the day moves towards evening, the low sun catches the top of the walls and filters through the greenery, giving the kind of soft golden light that makes portraits feel effortless rather than posed.

Why This City-and-Garden Pairing Works So Well

Choosing two settings can sound complicated, but a Town Hall ceremony followed by a walled-garden reception is a surprisingly natural fit. You get the formal, architectural moment for your vows and the images that come with it, then a complete change of pace for the celebration. The short journey between the two also becomes part of the story, marking the shift from ceremony to party. For couples weighing up a single venue versus two, this combination offers variety and a real sense of progression through the day without feeling logistically heavy.

Planning Notes for Couples Considering These Venues

A few things are worth thinking about if this pairing appeals to you. Build in a little breathing room between the ceremony and reception so nobody feels rushed, and use it for a short walk through central Oxford for portraits while your guests travel across. Because the Town Hall is a working civic building, ceremony times and access are more structured than at a private estate, so it pays to confirm your timings early. At the walled garden, plan for the British weather with a sheltered or covered option, and leave twenty unhurried minutes in the evening for portraits when the light is at its best.
