Oxford Town Hall wedding photography

Oxford Town Hall is a Grade II* listed civic building on St Aldate's, opened in 1897. Five of its rooms are licensed for weddings, from the Main Hall (ceremonies up to 500) down to the St Aldate's Room (40), so it works for a small civil ceremony as well as a large one.

I'm based in Oxford and I know the building well. I photograph it the way it deserves: documentary coverage with a nod to the architecture, on digital and 35mm film. Rooms, capacities and enquiries: oxfordtownhall.co.uk/weddings-at-oxford-town-hall

A thoughtful approach to your day

My approach to photographing an Oxford Town Hall wedding is simple: Be present. Keep it honest. Make it beautiful without turning it into a performance.

Whether it's the quiet of the morning, the ceremony among the walled beds, or the buzz of the reception, I photograph the day as it actually feels — not just how it looks. The energy of the room, the nerves, the joy, the chaos, that matters.

When direction is useful, I give it gently. When a moment deserves space, I step back and let it happen. The goal is never to take over the day, it's to document it with clarity, care, and a strong sense of place.

On the day, I'm quiet, calm, and easy to have around. Couples often tell me by the time it happens they forgot I was even there for long stretches, which I take as the highest compliment.

The result is a set of Oxford Town Hall wedding photographs that feel refined, emotional, and true to you.

About Oxford Town Hall

Oxford Town Hall is on St Aldate's, in the centre of Oxford. It is Grade II* listed, it opened in 1897, and five of its rooms are licensed for weddings: the Main Hall (ceremonies up to 500), the Assembly Room (160), the Old Library (100), the St Aldate's Room (40) and the Court Room (43, plus balcony).

You can hold the reception in the building or take it elsewhere in the city. The town hall's own pages give different dining numbers for some rooms, so check the room you want with them before you plan around a figure.

I'm based in Oxford and the Town Hall is one of my local venues, so I know where the light falls in the Main Hall and where to stand for portraits. Rooms, capacities and enquiries: oxfordtownhall.co.uk/weddings-at-oxford-town-hall

A day at Oxford Town Hall

A Town Hall wedding is compact and central, which makes for an efficient, unhurried day. Roughly how it tends to go:

The ceremony. Civil vows in the Main Hall, or in one of the smaller licensed rooms if the guest list is shorter.

The portraits. Out onto St Aldate's, or a short walk into the middle of Oxford. I keep them brief and do them where the light is good.

The reception. In the building, or elsewhere in the city. I photograph it as it happens.
