As a New College Oxford wedding photographer, I always tell couples this: New College is one of Oxford’s oldest, despite the name, and it hides one of the most photogenic secrets in the city: a set of medieval cloisters so atmospheric they have stood in for Hogwarts on film. If you are marrying here, you are working with genuine fourteenth-century drama.

The chapel is vast, solemn and beautiful, and like most college chapels it runs dark. The light falls in narrow shafts rather than floods, so we photograph the ceremony for the mood it actually has rather than trying to brighten it into something it is not.

The cloisters are the heart of it. Cool, shaded and wrapped around an ancient holm oak, they give you soft, even light and a sense of enclosure that feels timeless on camera. This is where some of the calmest, most flattering portraits happen, whatever the weather is doing outside.

New College also has something almost no other college can offer: a stretch of the original medieval city wall running along its gardens. The lawns, the mound and the old stone give you space to breathe and a backdrop that is genuinely one of a kind.

Like every central Oxford college, New College sits on the visitor trail and keeps its own rules about access and timing. The quietest, best light tends to sit at the edges of the day, and the most relaxed images come when we step slightly away from the busiest thoroughfares.

  • Use the Cloisters as Your Studio: The shaded, even light around the old holm oak is as forgiving as light gets in Oxford. When the sun is harsh or the sky is grey, this is where we go for the calmest portraits.
  • Walk the City Wall: The medieval wall and the gardens are New College’s rarest asset. A few quiet minutes here gives you images with a sense of age and space you cannot fake.
  • Respect the Chapel’s Mood: We let the chapel stay dark and serious rather than lighting it flat. It photographs like the centuries-old space it is, which is exactly the point.
