Ashmolean Museum wedding photography
The Ashmolean is Britain's oldest public museum, and one of the most striking places in Oxford to marry — a grand neoclassical building on Beaumont Street with sculpture galleries, a sweeping staircase, and a rooftop restaurant looking out over the city's skyline. It's not a conventional wedding venue, and that's exactly the appeal.
I'd photograph an Ashmolean wedding the way the building itself works — quietly dramatic. Stone columns and skylit galleries make for a different kind of backdrop to the usual marquee or manor house, on a mix of digital and 35mm film. Documentary at heart, with an eye for how the light moves through the atrium.

A thoughtful approach to your day
My approach to photographing an Ashmolean Museum wedding is simple. Be present. Keep it honest. Make it beautiful without turning it into a performance.
Whether it's the quiet of the morning, the ceremony in the gallery, or the last of the light across the rooftop, I photograph the day as it actually feels — not just how it looks. The energy of the room, the nerves, the joy, the chaos, the calm.
When direction is useful, I give it gently. When a moment deserves space, I step back and let it happen. The goal is never to take over the day; it's to document it with clarity, care, and a strong sense of place.
On the day, I'm quiet, calm, and easy to have around. Couples often tell me they forgot I was there for long stretches, which I take as the highest compliment.
The result is a set of Ashmolean Museum wedding photographs that feel refined, emotional, and true to you.
About the Ashmolean
The Ashmolean is licensed for weddings, so you can marry in the museum itself. The European Art Gallery holds up to 90 guests, the smaller galleries take 15 to 35, and the Rooftop Terrace and Dining Room take up to 70. The museum sells ceremony and reception packages, priced from £5,400 to £9,600 for 2026 to 2027, so check current prices with them.
Two museum rules I plan around: faux candles only, and confetti on the forecourt only. There is no on-site accommodation.
I am based in Oxford, and the Ashmolean sits on Beaumont Street in the middle of the city. Full details and packages are on the museum's own wedding pages: ashmolean.org/weddings
A day at the Ashmolean
A city-centre wedding moves differently to a countryside one, and I plan for that. Here is roughly how a day at the Ashmolean tends to unfold.
The ceremony. In one of the museum's licensed galleries, with the European Art Gallery for the bigger guest lists.
The reception. Drinks and dinner in the museum, with the Rooftop Terrace and Dining Room taking up to 70.
The evening. Guests spilling out onto Beaumont Street as the museum closes around you. Confetti is for the forecourt only, so we plan the exit around that.

Where are the best places for portraits at the Ashmolean?
That depends on the gallery and the light on the day. We will plan the timings together, and please check the museum's current photography rules when you book.
How much does a wedding photographer cost in Oxfordshire?
Pricing depends on hours of coverage, day-of assistance and albums. Visit our Investment page for full details.
Do you photograph weddings outside Oxfordshire?
Yes. We regularly travel into the Cotswolds, Gloucestershire, Warwickshire and Buckinghamshire, and further afield for the right couple.
How far in advance should we book?
Most couples book 12 to 18 months ahead, especially for weekend dates at popular Oxfordshire venues. Early enquiries are always welcome.
Do you offer engagement shoots in Oxfordshire?
Yes, an Oxfordshire engagement shoot is included in most packages, a relaxed way to get comfortable in front of the camera before the day itself.
What's your photography style?
Documentary and honest. We capture the day as it unfolds rather than directing every moment, with a calm, unobtrusive presence throughout.
